• What is the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown all about?

Since its inception in 2005, the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown (MBSC) has become the nation’s largest and most spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration.

Jointly presented by Esplanade- Theatres by the Bay and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the development agency for Marina Bay, the event hopes to create a New Year’s Eve tradition that is unique to Singapore and offers an opportunity for the community to bond in a meaningful way.

This year, as part of MBSC, members of the public are invited to pen their wishes for the new year on 30,000 wishing charms that will be tied onto a new visual arts installation of 60 wishing trees at Marina Bay waterfront promenade from 1 – 30 December 2016. Overseas Singaporeans and friends of Singapore can also be a part of this meaningful celebration by penning their wishes on virtual wishing charms here.

  • Why were the wishing spheres discontinued?

For the past 11 editions of MBSC, wishes were written on wishing spheres, collected between October and December, and then installed and lit up in Marina Bay after Christmas Day until New Year’s Eve.

The new wishing installation presented as part of MBSC2017 offers visitors to Marina Bay an opportunity to bond in a meaningful way, by penning their wishes on a wishing charm and then personally attaching their charm to the wishing trees installed along Marina Bay waterfront promenade.

A total of 30,000 wishing charms will be tied on 60 wishing trees, to form a sustainable visual arts presentation visible around Marina Bay.

  • What was the significance of/ thinking behind the new wishing activity?

The tradition of connecting people from all walks of life to make wishes for the year ahead has always been central to MBSC.  This has not changed, but the collective expression of wishes is being refreshed with the new wishing trees installation this year. We also wanted participants to see their wishes connect more tangibly with the larger installation, and the act of personally attaching one’s charm to the trees allows for this.

  • How many wishing charms will there be this year?

Between 1 – 30 December, there will be 30,000 charms distributed by our MBSC2017 Wishing Activity Attendants. The penning of wishes is free, and we hope to fill the trees with all 30,000 charms by New Year’s Eve.

  • What other programmes can one expect on 31 December?

There will be a variety of programmes planned around Marina Bay, both free and ticketed. For more information, please click here.

  • When is the countdown sequence?

This year’s Countdown sequence begins one minute before midnight on 31 December 2016, projected on the façade of the Fullerton Hotel facing Marina Bay. The Countdown sequence leads into an 8-minute Midnight Display—MBSC’s fireworks display re-imagined for 2017—  which integrates lasers, lights and flame effects for the first time amidst the iconic fireworks in the Bay.

  • Where can I purchase tickets to participate in the various events at Marina Bay?

While most of the activities around the bay are non-ticketed, Rock On! 2017 – a music concert held at The Float @ Marina Bay, and selected inflatables at BounceOFF! Fiesta 2016 are ticketed. You may refer to individual event listings for ticketing details.

  • Where are the vantage points to view the fireworks?

The fireworks are designed such that they can be enjoyed and viewed all around Marina Bay.

  • How do I get to Marina Bay?

Due to road and lane closures around Marina Bay on New Year’s Eve, the public is encouraged to use public transport. Marina Bay can be accessed via the North-South MRT line, the Downtown Line, and the Circle Line. Please refer to our map for more information.
